BLOG POST FOR GITEX SHOPPER 2018

WHY IT'S GAME ON! FOR GITEX SHOPPER

Being at the sharp end of retail sales in the electronics and tech industries has meant GITEX Shopper has to constantly stay with, if not ahead, of the curve. Over the years the show has adapted to satisfy demand for the next big thing and the 2018 event is a case in point – particularly with the launch of the Shopper Games video gaming tournaments. We anticipate the inaugural Shopper Games will attract thousands of contestants from across the UAE and beyond who will battle on the exciting schedule of competitions planned from October 2nd.

We are extremely confident that this feature will grow exponentially because the region has all the right fundamentals to make it happen – a youthful population where 25 per cent of the demographic profile is aged between 15-29, a high propensity for early technology adoption, a relatively high per capita disposable income and an increasing smart phone ownership penetration.

Most people when they first think of video games, think of teenage boys exercising their testosterone on aggressive challenges or the armchair sportsman pitting his ‘expertise’ on some of the world’s most aspiring courses and tracks. Yet this industry is this year notching up sales of US$137.9 billion growing by more than 13 per on last year, according to the sector’s marketing intelligence provider, Newzoo.

The fact is that gaming is changing. There are games now for the very young and games for niche interests, gaming has made its way into the advertising business being used as a vehicle for product and service promotion and with technology now more accessible than ever, video games have even entered the realm of the classroom.

But the most significant factor which points to its take off in the Middle East will be inextricably linked to the adoption of smartphone technology and here the signs are promising. Technology analysts Frost & Sullivan put MENA’s adoption rate at 63 per cent of the population, which rises to 76 per cent for the GCC – and growing!

According to market researchers, Statista, shared revenue of the video gaming industry in the Middle East was around $3 billion in 2017, with the biggest markets including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. And ‘Statista’ has dubbed the market as “young” and with high potential as regionwide esports take-up rises.

The scene then is set: high smartphone penetration, huge appetite for new technology adoption, health per capita disposable income and a burgeoning start-up industry largely focused on the tech sector. The introduction of Shopper Games focuses on this emerging regional sector. The inaugural games zone will be packed and abuzz with excitement – the fact is, that it can only get bigger in line with industry forecasts and consumer trends. So, Let the Games commence – and watch this space!

UAE consumer electronics market expected to reach AED12.3 billion by 2021

Dubai, UAE: The eagerly-awaited 2018 edition of GITEX Shopper - the region’s favourite and longest-running consumer electronic bonanza - is offering gadget and technology buyers the chance to access the best electronics deals and promotions available in the region when it opens next month.

Returning to Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for 2-6 October in Za’abeel Halls 4-6, the Autumn 2018 edition will debut a new Xperience Zone for the first time, designed across four dedicated sections to provide visitors with the knowhow to make informed purchases during the show.

“For the best part of three decades, GITEX Shopper has served as a bellwether for setting purchasing trends in the consumer electronics segment by supporting domestic retailers and providing millions of consumers with the best deals and unbelievable offers available in the UAE marketplace,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). “This year, GITEX Shopper 2018 will enhance that value proposition by offering visitors exclusive deals and more opportunities to win big, with a raft of hourly and daily competitions which offer prizes unavailable in traditional retail outlets.”

GITEX Shopper Introduces techsperts
For one of its sections in its new Xperience Zone, the GITEX Shopper team has recruited an army of techsperts from Tech Radar to assist shoppers on the best products to purchase, while a series of Tricks & Tips sessions will see the techsperts offer support, guidance and tips on getting the most out of electronic purchases. From providing tricks on switching between Android and iOS, to taking better photographs on your mobile, GITEX Shopper visitors can get exclusive insights through numerous free-to-attend panel sessions.  There will also be an opportunity to check-in for one-on-one advice about the latest smart phones, laptops, tablets, TVs and more.

Shopper Games makes debut
Making its debut this year is a five-day blitz of video gaming tournaments expected to be contested by more than 400 would-be champions from across the UAE and beyond. Additionally, the Xperience Zone will feature an ‘Unboxing’ demonstrations streamed directly from the show. Making a guest appearance will be the award-winning content creator, YouTuber and Technologist, EMKWAN, who has amassed almost 44,000 subscribers.

Shopper Drone Zone
Taking technology to new heights, the final section of the Xperience Zone - the Shopper Drone Zone - will offer novice and expert drone operator’s first-hand training on how to operate a drone without crashing it in a safe skills-based area on the show floor. Visitors who love the experience can then pick up a drone of their own at incredible GITEX Shopper prices.

With recent Euromonitor data revealing the UAE’s consumer electronics market is expected to post annual sales of AED12.3 billion by 2021, smartphones, laptops and HDTVs – the long-time favourites of GITEX Shopper crowds – remain the most popular consumer electronic items in the Emirates. In-home and in-car electronics also continue to post strong sales, with the International Data Corporation (IDC) forecasting Middle East and Africa consumers will spend in addition of USD300 million on smart home technologies this year.

Consumers delay purchases for GITEX Shopper
According to research conducted by DWTC following last year’s event, 78 per cent of GITEX Shopper visitors revealed they typically delay vital consumer electronics purchases until the show, with 81 per cent insisting a preference to buy at the show over physical and online retailers.

“That’s because GITEX Shopper is “synonymous” with exclusive, market-busting deals and offers. GITEX Shopper 2018 will once again bring the region’s top retailers and consumer brands together under one unbeatable roof, providing visitors with an experience that they cannot gain online or in stores” added LohMirmand. “The show is synonymous with value that simply isn’t offered anywhere else in the market and this year’s shoppers will have access to more than 35,000 products ranging from the latest gadgets across smartphones, wearables and cameras, to laptops, HDTVs, consoles and in-home entertainment. What makes GITEX Shopper so popular is that visitors can compare products and deals offered by various retailers at every 10 steps.”

Top electronic retailers to exhibit
Key exhibitors participating at this year’s event include Emax, Jacky’s, Jumbo, SharafDG, Axiom, Arabian Trading Agency, Al Ain Phone, KY Style Home, Naam Electronics FZE, Nishat General Company LLC, Time House Trading LLC. and Yuet Meng Trading Co Pte Ltd.,

“During the five-day event, we are expecting a surge in demand for gaming laptops, thin and light laptops and gaming products, digital cameras, ultra-large televisions using OLED and QLED technologies, as well as high-end smartphones from leading brands,” said Atul Joshi, Head of Distribution at Jumbo Electronics.

“Aside from the bundle offers, GITEX Shopper visitors can enjoy the benefits of JumboSalama, an extended warranty that covers any product defects and physical damage for up to two years. Jumbo Unwired Crew, a team of qualified, experienced and trained tech experts, will also be at GITEX Shopper to assist visitors through gadget-related set up issues via smart solutions, streaming services and voice assisted solution,” added Joshi.

“As always, we are very excited to be a part of GITEX Shopper, an event which brings together people from across the region. The anticipation ahead of the October edition will drive further sales and interest, and we are gearing up to provide added value to those who attend,” said Mahesh Chotrani, Assistant Vice President, Jacky’s Electronics.

Visitors can expect great offers, latest gadgets and products with offers like never before on all categories. Besides getting full value for money, we at Jacky’s Electronics are working on a surprise giveaway for our customers at the show.”

CONSUMER EVENTS - DELIVERING THE EXPERIENCE THAT CAN’T BE GOT ONLINE

Ever since the emergence of e-commerce we have heard endless predictions of the demise of consumer shows - yet rumours of their death seem to have been greatly exaggerated. The good news just in from the industry resource Trade Show News Network is that globally the industry continues to register growth – accruing a 1.6 per cent uptick in the second quarter of this year with advances across all metrics including exhibitor and visitor growth, revenues and square meterage covered.

So how and why are consumer fairs bucking the skeptics? Through innovation for increased consumer engagement and offering the seamless experience which still cannot be secured online. We at DWTC bring these vital factors into our planning which ultimately focusses on how we can make the consumer visit more exciting, informative and rewarding and we encourage our exhibitors to do likewise.

GITEX Shopper, the region’s largest gathering of leading ICT retailers and suppliers, is a case in point. It is constantly evolving much as you would expect for a show devoted to the latest in consumer electronics, gadgets and tech advances. If ever there was an industry that moves faster than an express train, it’s this one – not to continually innovate when representing an industry whose very survival depends on innovation would, indeed, be like signing a death warrant.

The 2018 edition has taken major strides in changing the face of the event with brand new features designed to keep consumers coming, keep them spending and staying for longer.

When the doors open to the show this October 2, we anticipate a stream of more than 150,000 visitors arriving to secure a bonanza of tech frenzy deals, discover tech innovations, many of which represent regional breakthroughs, and next-gen products, and even the way we pay for them. But increasingly the visitor expects more – they want to be entertained, get value-for-money on their visit and leave really feeling they’ve been to an event that year-on-year is worth their time.

And that’s why we keep innovating. This year Shopper goers will find a host of innovations which will enrich their experience. Through a new dedicated Xperience Zone they’ll pick up tips, tricks and advice on the latest gadgets and accessories, witness ‘Unboxing’ demos being streamed in real time, accrue training in the Shopper Drone Zone on how to safely operate a drone. The show will also host the debut of its Shopper Games video gaming tournaments to be contested by thousands of would-be champions from across the UAE and beyond.

What’s more they’ll have numerous chances to win big through the show’s Visit & Win, Scratch & Win, and Shop & Win promotions. Prizes include the latest MG ZS Compact SUV, holiday packages, Nikon cameras and XBOXs. They can use the Shopper Trade-In facility to exchange their old electronics for GITEX Shopper vouchers.

We’ll also keep visitors entertained with various stage activations on the hour every day including a new Shopper Price is Right competition where visitors can play a game to win the price of products and win exciting prizes including holidays to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, India and Bosnia. On top of all that well-known local DJs Brent Black of Virgin Radio and Kris Fade will entertain by broadcasting live from the show.

This is entertainment proving there’s no business, like show business. Events have to innovate, educate and entertain by keeping abreast of the trends within the industry it serves and the preferences of the visitors they rely on to keep the show on the road. We’re constantly researching the trends and will keep on innovating. So to the skeptics: Don’t quite write that obituary yet.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW!

DEALS, BUNDLES AND TRADE-INS INSPIRE RETAIL FRENZY AS NEW-LOOK GITEX SHOPPER HEATS UP COMPETITION PRIZES FOR WEEKEND SALES RUSH

Virgin Radio ‘Ultimate Smart Home’ and incredible SharafDG deal of AED89,999 for a 2018 BMW 318i and a 65” 4K Ultra HD TV get Dubai shoppers talking

Dubai, UAE – Wednesday 2 October, 2018: GITEX Shopper 2018 has witnessed a consumer electronics sales splurge during its opening two days as UAE residents and visitors flock to unload a treasure chest of unbeatable, unbelievable offers, discounts, bargain bundles and prizes at the region’s largest consumer electronics shopping spectacular.

The newly-consolidated annual show, running at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) through 11pm on Saturday 6 October, underlined its retail powerhouse standing as crowds descended on Za’abeel Halls 4-6 to grab the latest smartphones, smart TVs, laptops, home electronics, gaming consoles, wearable technology and cameras - to name a few – at prices unavailable anywhere else.

With exclusive limited offers and bumper flash sales on 35,000 products, the UAE public are making a beeline for the show after work, leaving leading retailers to report hot sales across major international and new-to-the-region technology brands.

“GITEX Shopper is the biggest consumer electronics event in the GCC and we’re seeing why,” said Narayan Agarwal, CFO of retail chain EMAX. “This is one place we can connect to customers and see what other retailers are doing. GITEX Shopper connects customers with retailers and brings all the brands under one roof. As a retailer we want to offer exclusive value to GITEX Shopper customer because this is the one platform where customers expect the best deals they can get – and EMAX is delivering.”

The very first to enter GITEX Shopper 2018 was British Dubai resident, Joe Lee: “This is my first visit to GITEX Shopper. I’ve heard it’s the best place for tech bargains. I’m here to upgrade my Samsung watch and I’ve promised myself I’ll pick up a 4K TV. I’m considering a [Sony] PS4, too. It’s cool to see MG cars here and I spotted the massage section which I’m taking advantage of after a look around.”

Ranzel Barretto, a Dubai resident originally from India, added: “I have been coming to GITEX Shopper for many years and always buy something. I usually buy laptops, but this year I’ve bought a phone. I went for a Samsung S9 plus, which I got for a really good deal. My favourite thing about GITEX Shopper is the flash sales, I love them. I research a lot online for electronic products that I plan to purchase, but if there is a product which I don’t have knowledge about, then it’s great to have these guys on hand.”

The Price is Right

As attentions begin to turn to the weekend, GITEX Shopper organisers DWTC are amplifying dozens of competitions to further incentivise crowds. There are tonnes of opportunities to win big prizes, with each visitor entered in for a chance at a brand-new car – the MG ZS Compact SUV – just for buying an entry ticket.

With hourly ‘Shop & Win’ draws for GITEX Shopper visitors to win their on-show purchase values back in cash, and the ‘Visit & Win’ draws awarding a host of other prizes that include Nikon Coolpix B500 cameras, AED1,000 Dell vouchers, Honor 8X smartphones and Microsoft Xbox One S TTBs. Visitors can also get up on stage to win daily holiday package giveaways to a variety of international destinations including Georgia, Azerbaijan and India at the daily GITEX Shopper 2018 ‘Price is Right’ contest.

“The excitement and drama in a winner takes all raffle, let alone the level of prize value afforded to the winner, is exactly the type of unique value proposition which keeps bringing crowds to GITEX Shopper year after year,” said Avinash Shanbhogue, Portfolio Director of GITEX Shopper.

Virgin Radio will also name the winner of its fortnight-long, on air ‘Ultimate Smart Home’ GITEX Shopper competition on Thursday 4 October. Having added a different smart gadget to its Ultimate Smart Home line-up for the past two weeks, the technology fest is now worth AED 40,000. Over 50 finalists have already won keys to the home but only one key opens the door to prizes including a Smart TV, iPhone XS, Arlo Q, Ecobee Smart Thermostat, Macbook Air, Playstation 4 Pro and more.

“It’s so great to be back again with Virgin Radio 104.4 broadcasting my show from GITEX Shopper this year. Of all the years we’ve been here, our ‘Ultimate Smart Home’ promotion is definitely the biggest - giving listeners a chance to win themselves AED 40,000 worth of smart tech. Plus, with all these exclusive tech deals, everyone goes home a winner,” said Virgin Radio presenter, Brent Black.

And There’s More…

GITEX Shopper’s brand-new ‘Xperience Zone’ is also pulling in the crowds. Visitors can sign up for free one-on-one technology ‘tips and tricks’ sessions with ‘techsperts’ from Tech Radar, learn to safely pilot a drone or wage an esports battle in the all-new Shopper Games zone. There’s even a chance to get a massage for visitors overwhelmed by the sheer variety of offers.

Another brand-new feature is the Trade-In Zone, where old laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart watches, iPod or MP3 players are valued by specialists who then convert that sum into vouchers to spend at GITEX Shopper 2018.

GITEX Shopper 2018 is open daily from 11am - 11pm. Tickets are priced at AED 20, a reduction on last year. Students enter for AED 10. Entry is free for children under five. Creating more convenience for visitors, GITEX Shopper 2018 is offering six hours of free parking at DWTC to those who spend more than AED300 at the show.
